About AfEONet

AfEONet's mission is to monitor and document the state of civic space for citizen election observers in Africa. Our ultimate goal is to establish a robust monitoring framework that highlights and reports whenever the work of citizen observers is threatened.

Citizen election observers are now recognized as human rights defenders, playing an indispensable role in upholding civil and political rights, as well as strengthening democratic values and principles.

We envision an Africa where every election is observed by empowered, independent, and secure citizen observers — free to document, report, and defend the integrity of democratic processes without fear of reprisal.

A future where civic space is open in every country on the continent, and citizen observation is recognized, protected, and fully integrated into the democratic fabric of African nations.

We track the state of civic space for citizen election observers across Africa, using an eight-dimension framework to assess the conditions in which they operate.

We produce reports and analysis on the regulatory, administrative, and political environment surrounding citizen election observation.

Capacity Building

We train and support focal persons and observer organizations to collect, validate, and report on civic space data.

Advocacy

We engage electoral management bodies, governments, and civil society to strengthen legal protections and open civic space for observers.
